Safety notes

  • Gatekeeper warns on unsigned / unnotarised DMGs. Don't dismiss the warning and install anyway.
  • Malicious DMGs that disguise their contents exist — verify the publisher's hash.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to eject a mounted DMG leaves it cluttering the Finder sidebar.
  • Shipping DMG without a background image and Applications alias leaves first-time users unsure how to install.
