About FileHint
FileHint explains what a file is, how to open it, and whether it is safe — for humans, in plain language.
FileHint is a reference site for file extensions and MIME types, framed around a simple question: how should I handle this file?
What we cover
- Per-extension usage, how to open, and safety notes
- Per-MIME behaviour across browsers, servers, and email
- A File Signature Checker that verifies a file's real format
- Links to related and similar formats
Editorial policy
- Every page is written to include at least one actionable answer.
- Technical details come from primary sources — IANA, vendor documentation, RFCs, ISO standards — and every page cites them.
- Japanese and English are edited independently; we do not machine-translate.
Update policy
- Pages are refreshed as major browsers, operating systems, and format specs evolve.
- When a notable CVE lands (e.g. xz-utils 2024), we update affected pages as quickly as possible.
- Every page footer shows
Updated: YYYY-MM-DD, which is also reflected in our sitemap.
Corrections policy
- Report typos, factual errors, or broken links via the contact page.
- We aim to fix confirmed technical errors within 7 days.
- Material corrections are called out at the top of the affected page for a visible period.
