Convert HEIC to JPEG on iPhone, Mac, and Windows

A short, OS-by-OS guide for turning iPhone HEIC images into shareable JPEG — and what happens to quality and GPS metadata along the way.

If you prefer OS-native tools only, follow the steps below.

On the iPhone

  1. Open the photo in the Photos app.
  2. Tap the share icon (top-right ellipsis).
  3. Save to Files; the save dialog re-encodes to JPEG automatically.
  4. For all future shots to be JPEG from the start, go to Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.

Mac Preview

  1. Double-click the HEIC to open it in Preview.
  2. File > Export...
  3. Set format to JPEG and save.

Windows

  1. Install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Open the HEIC in Photos.
  3. More (...) > Save as > pick .jpg.

GPS metadata

  • Some converters keep the original EXIF GPS tags.
  • Strip them before posting online — see the JPEG reference for platform-specific instructions.
